Step
16
Thoroughly clean old grease from upper outer race. The surface of
the race should be smooth and without marks or gouges. Replace race
if necessary.
Step
17
Thoroughly clean old grease from the lower outer race. The surface
of the race should be smooth and without marks or gouges. Replace
race if necessary.
Step
18
Pack both steering head bearings with high quality bearing grease.
Use liberal amounts of grease. (We used Mobil1's Full-synthetic Universal
Grease, available at any auto parts store.)
Step
19
Grease the steering stem with liberal amounts of high quality bearing
grease and slide the lower steering head bearing onto the stem.
Step
20
Apply liberal amounts of grease to upper and lower steering races.
Step
21
Carefully slide the steering stem assembly, with the lower bearing
installed, upwards. Install the upper bearing, spacer and dust cover
while holding the steering stem so that it doesn't slide down. Install
the lower steering head locknut and tighten it to 32.5 lb-ft (45
N-m, 4.5 kgf-m) using komoto steering head locknut tool. Now unscrew the locknut by a quarter of a turn. This is done to relieve the initial stress of tightening the lower locknut on the bearings and ensure proper feel of the steering.
Step
22
Install the steering locknut washer by aligning the stopper lug
to the groove in the steering stem. Install upper steering head
locknut and tighten it to 58 lb-ft (80 N-m, 8.0 kgf-m) using komoto
steering head locknut tool.
Step
23
Install the upper triple clamp, washer and steering stem head nut.
Leave the head nut hadn tight for now.
