How to use the Swingarm Locknut Tool

Continued from page 3

Step 22 Unscrew the shock absorber linkage and cushion rod mount. Remove the spacers and feel the movement of rollers of bearings with your fingers. The rollers should move without any stiction. Replace bearing(s) if you feel any stiction or hesitation in the movement. Clean the spacers and bearing surfaces with a rag to remove old grease. Inspect the spacers for damage; replace if necessary. Apply a high-quality bearing grease liberally to the bearings and spacers. Reinstall the spacers and bearings. Reintall the linkage to the frame by torquing the linkage mounting nut to 78 N-m (7.8 kgf-m, 56.5 lb-ft). Reintall the cushion rod to the mount on the linkage by torquing the cushion rod mounting nut to 78 N-m (7.8 kgf-m, 56.5 lb-ft).

Step 23 Swingarm is now ready to be installed. Insert the swingarm into its mounting position in the chassis.

Step 24 Screw-in the pivot shaft carefully from the right side, so that threads on the frame are not damaged. Tighten the pivot shaft to 15 N-m (1.5 kgf-m, 11.0 lb-ft) using a 27mm socket wrench.

Step 25 Install the swingarm pivot nut on the left side and tighten it to 100 N-m (10.0 kgf-m, 72.5 lb-ft) using a 36mm socket wrench.

Step 26 Install the swingarm locknut on the right side and tighten it to 90 N-m (9.0 kgf-m, 65.0 lb-ft) using the Swingarm Locknut Tool.

Step 27 Reinstall the shock absorber and tighten both upper and lower mounting nuts to 50 N-m (5.0 kgf-m, 36.0 lb-ft). Reinstall the cushion rod mounting bolt and tighten the nut to 78 N-m (7.8 kgf-m, 56.5 lb-ft).

Step 28 Install the rear wheel and tighten the axle nut to 110 N-m (11.0 kgf-m, 79.6 lb-ft). Install a new cotter pin in the axle. Remount the drive chain with a new masterlink, or reuse the existing masterlink if bike is so equipped. Route the brake hose and tighten the hose union bolt, with new washers, to 23 N-m (2.3 kgf-m, 16.5 lb-ft) with a 12mm socket wrench. Bleed air from the brake system after installation of the hose. Carefully place the swingarm stand under the spools and remove the tie downs and jackstands. Reinstall the tail and lower cowlings. Reinstall the passenger and rider seats.

Step 29 Re-inspect everything once again, especially the operation of rear brake before riding.
